Close to Fort Myers just off the southwest coast of Florida, Sanibel Island
is a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. Picking up your Fort Myers car
rentals at the airport you are only a short 45 minutes away from a great holiday
destination.
This barrier island is about 12 miles in length and 4 miles wide and is
easily accessible by crossing the causeway in your Fort Myers car rentals. It
runs east to west of the Florida coast instead of north to south, which gives it
a scoop shape. Sanibel is a wildlife refuge with almost 2/3 of it a wildlife
preserve. It offers great bike and hiking trails along with 17 miles of
tranquil, sparkling sandy beaches.
No trip to Sanibel is complete without at least one excursion into
beachcombing. Acting as a scoop because of its shape the island attracts people
worldwide for this activity. Sanibel is considered one of the best places to
gather shells and best of all sea shelling appeals to all ages. See all those
people hunched over, carrying buckets and shovels? That’s the “Sanibel
Stoopâ€. The best times for beachcombing are right after a storm and at low
tide so get your bucket, net bag, shovel, hat and sunscreen from the trunk of
your Fort Myers car rentals and join the stoopers. You’ll pick up some
exquisite shells for your collection and crafts. And you can help the living,
stranded mollusks by placing them back in the water.
Sanibel Island has some rules about access to the windswept, sandy beaches
that you may want to keep in mind. For instance, there are various permits
available to you, such as ‘A Permits’, which limits certain beaches only for
you. ‘B permits’ can be purchased at the Police Station and will allow you
to have access to certain beaches in your Fort Myers car rentals. All public
beaches have restroom facilities while some offer other amenities such as
outdoor showers, picnic tables, or barbecues. Walking on the hard-packed sand at
the water’s edge or just relaxing under the shade of the huge pines is a great
way to spend your time so pack a picnic along with your swimming gear into the
trunk of your Fort Myers car rentals and hit the beach!
Free parking is available for your Fort Myers car rentals at all Causeway
Beaches. You can even park right up to the water’s edged - just remember about
high tide - or under the numerous shade trees. For the more active person, you
may want to go kayaking, windsurfing or canoeing. Fishing for your supper in the
gulf is also a great pastime but watch out for those seabirds that will try to
steal your catch. Have a camera ready to have evidence of the one that got away.
Besides spending time at the beaches, Sanibel Island offers an abundance of
things to do. You may wish to hike along the many nature trails enjoying the
native flora and fauna. Walking under the shading trees seeing the colorful
butterflies flitting about and listening to beautiful songs of the birds
chirping happily is a great way to wear off that delicious ice cream cone or
decadent dessert from the night before. There are really great bike trails too.
Of course Florida is not Florida without golf and tennis clubs. Grab your clubs
or racket from your Fort Myers car rentals and experience the Island games.
There are many great places to shop as well. Sanibel Island is famous for its
shell art and crafts so be sure to pick up some unique souvenirs to take home
with you as a reminder of your great holiday.
